WW2 Obscura is a project dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the hidden stories of World War II — the ones that don't make it into textbooks, documentaries, or popular films. These are the episodes of extraordinary courage, bizarre coincidence, quiet heroism, and jaw-dropping obscurity that most people will never encounter through a Google search.
The idea was born from a friend named Mike Paynter — a man with encyclopedic knowledge of World War II, a Freemason, a deeply religious man in the best sense of the word, and someone who cherishes every moment on this earth after surviving a near-death heart experience. When Mike and his wife traveled to the Normandy coast and hired a PhD-level guide who started telling them names and stories from the beaches that neither of them had ever heard — names that no monument carries and no film depicts — we realized that there was an ocean of history still waiting to be told.
His wife, a woman of such intensity that she wrote a journal through the COVID pandemic that now resides in the Library of the Smithsonian, understood instinctively that these stories matter. That they shouldn't be lost. That Mike would light up every time he discovered something new, something that made him lean forward in his chair and say "I didn't know that one."
