Desmond Doss

Desmond Doss was a Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector who refused to carry a weapon but served as a combat medic. On May 5, 1945, at Hacksaw Ridge outside Okinawa, Doss single-handedly lowered 75 wounded men to safety down a 400-foot cliff face, one at a time, under heavy Japanese fire. He did it alone, repeatedly saying: Lord, help me get one more. He was wounded by a grenade but crawled 300 yards to safety and insisted on waiting for a more wounded man before accepting treatment. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.
