Nurse • Poland • 1922–2003
Hid 12 Jewish people in the basement of the SS headquarters while working as a nurse for the German military.
Irena Gut, a Polish Catholic nurse working in a German military hospital, hid twelve Jewish people in the basement of the hospital's SS headquarters in Tarnopol. She maintained her position as a nurse under the direct supervision of German officers, including Major Eduard Rugemer, who was unaware that the woman he was pursuing was hiding Jews beneath his feet. She also used her position to gather intelligence and pass it to the Polish underground.
